What began with a spark of ingenuity from one creative New Englander with an eye for utility and thrift has become an American tradition. More than a century later, Ampad™ continues to deliver high quality, innovative products used in offices, schools, and homes throughout the United States.

In 1888, young Thomas W. Holley was a paper mill employee in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The mill’s rejects, called “sortings,” seemed an ideal source of raw material for the budding entrepreneur who was clever enough to redirect the mill’s sortings into usable and appealing products.

Holley purchased the mill’s sortings at a bargain, and set up shop in one room the size of a garage in a small building on Main Street. He cut the paper to size, added ruled lines, and stitched the paper into pads – thereby applying good old American ingenuity to create the now ubiquitous legal pad.
